Increasing our Parent Accountability

Increasing our Parent Accountability

Rally the Parents to Be Responsible Again

Written by Marcus Hart

As an ex-youth and family crisis stabilization worker, I was responsible for using intervention techniques to provide coping guidance for at-risk children. Our theory was that at-risk children wouldn't handle emotional outbursts even if they knew that's what we were asking, but if we could just get them to hear and talk to someone who wasn't prejudging their episodes, they'd like it despite their lack of trust for authority figures, and we'd have saved a child from being arrested or death.

So it was--and is--a common practice to send out this type of help for parents who have difficulty dealing with their children's emotions and behaviors. Where today we have more children who created an agenda for themselves that isn't revealed until after everyone attend their next court case or sadly, their funeral.  "The main actor may be the child, but more accountability must be placed on the parents to prevent these tragedies.

How do you parents influence children behaviors? Of course, the bible describes in 2 Chronicles 26:4 "...he did right...according to all his father...had done". When parents prep and educate themselves on rearing their children through classes, consulting within their faith community for support, and calling on the help of other family members is when accountability becomes established.

Anyway, I still have friends in the youth and family services community--two of whom have foster children and own three successful group homes--and I counsel many people in my ministry. It might be interesting to ask them their point of view about this practice of parenting. Is it moral to require and demand more parent accountability? Is it justified? Do they have any qualms? Does it even work?

I propose ideas that are built on the rationale and logic of the people only.
